What is the 15 kVA Pad Mounted Transformer?

15 kVA pad-mounted transformer is a transformer especially designed for outdoor installation on a concrete pad. Distribution networks use it to step down high-voltage electricity received from overhead or underground power lines to a lower voltage for residential, commercial, or light industrial use. As a result of its compact and sealed design, it is highly reliable for outdoor applications and protected from environmental factors like moisture, dirt, and extreme weather conditions. The transformer comes with a tamper-proof enclosure which meets safety standards, it is therefore safe in public areas. Also, the 15 kVA rating states that the largest power that can dissipate is 15 kilovolt-amperes, making it an ideal small power distribution system. Features included are cooling fins or radiators, and advanced insulation material used to increase durability and operational safety. These pads have a pad-mounted design for easy installation and serve a dual purpose, applying load tap changers or fuses to maintain voltage and protect against fault.

What is the difference between pole-mounted and pad-mounted transformers?

Typical overhead distribution transformers are mounted on utility poles and reside on pole-mounted transformers. Because of these transformers’ compact size and high-mounted location, they are out of reach and safe to use, preventing tampering and damage. Rural or less populated areas which have overhead power lines are their main application.

However, the pedestal transformer is mounted on a concrete pad in the ground and enclosed in a tamper-resistant and weatherproof enclosure. As an example of these transformers, they have become popular in underground distribution systems in urban, suburban, or industrial areas, when overhead lines are either not feasible or desirable compared to overhead lines.

Key Differences

Mounting Location: Utility poles mount pole-mounted transformers, pedestal mounted transformers sit on the ground.

Distribution Systems: Overhead systems use pole-mounted transformers, during underground power distribution, pedestal-mounted transformers are used.

Applications: Rural or low-density areas require Pole mounted transformers, and Urban or suburban require Pedestal mounted transformers.

Safety: Compared with the open enclosure, a sealed enclosure of the pedestal-mounted transformers provides greater protection against tampering and environmental factors.

Maintenance: Overhead maintenance equipment is needed for pole-mounted transformers, while pedestal-mounted transformers are more easily serviced at ground level.

What is the rating of a pad-mounted transformer?

The rating of a pad-mounted transformer depends on the design and Application, it is usually specified in kilovolt amperes (kVA). There are so many ratings for these transformers to choose from based on the power distribution for which they need to be used. Common ratings for pad-mounted transformers include:

Small to Medium Capacity: These transformers are commonly used in residential neighborhoods, small commercial establishments, and light industrial applications ranging from 10 kVA to 500 kVA.

High Capacity: These transformers are usually at least 750 kVA (10 MVA) but up to 10,000 kVA (10 MVA) or more for larger commercial buildings industrial facilities and utility substations.

The specific rating needed is based on the load need of the application, the voltage level in the power distribution system, and the quantity of customers being served. For instance, for such applications lower ratings (15 kVA or 50 kVA) tend to be adopted while higher ratings (1,000 kVA or more) are usual in industrial or large-scale utility applications.
