What is the Box-Type Transformer?

The Box Type Transformer is a compact substation troop located with the exclusion of air spaces for the distribution of power in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. In this transformer configuration, the transformer, switchgear, low-voltage switchboard, and associated equipment are all integrated into a weatherproof enclosure. It is easily installed, maintained, and relocated and well suited for urban areas, where compactness and efficiency are essential. Usually, its enclosure makes use of the durable material of steel or reinforced aluminum to achieve strong protection against environmental liability like moisture, dust, and temperature fluctuations. Such high safety standards are possible with a box-type structure, live parts are isolated and the risk of electrical faults is minimized. Moreover, the design is carefully made to accommodate natural or forced cooling systems to keep the transformer operating within an optimum operating temperature range under high load conditions. These units come in a range of voltage capacities and are suitable for loads ranging from low to high; even in such loads, the units exhibit stable and reliable operation.

Working Principle

Pad mounted transformer is a device that steps down the high-voltage electricity from the main distribution lines to a voltage acceptable for the final application. It’s an electromagnetic induction principle, where alternating current (AC) in the primary winding induces a magnetic field that induces a voltage in the secondary winding. The output voltage is set according to the required consumption of the connected power and is determined by the transformation ratio of the two windings: primary/secondary. The transformer’s core and windings are arranged within the housing to furnish good efficiency and low energy losses. When energized, the transformer’s core becomes a perfect magnetic circle, with a section of primary winding electrically connected to the incoming high voltage electricity, which flows through the primary winding, setting up a magnetic field traveling towards the secondary winding. This magnetic induction then causes a current in the secondary winding which is regulated to a filtered more useable voltage.

Benefits

  1. Space efficiency:

American Transformer is a compact, all-in-one electrical design, consisting of various electrical components in a single small housing to fit into installation and applies to areas with high density.

  1. Quick installation:

All necessary components are pre-installed inside the housing, installer on-site assembly is minimal, and quick installation with minimal on-site assembly time lowers labor costs.

  1. Enhanced safety:

It offers full enclosure of the high voltage components to reduce electrical risks and to improve operator safety, as well as avoid injury to nearby personnel.

  1. Weather resistance:

These transformers are made of durable material, sealed in such a way that enables the transformers to endure environmental factors, such as dust, moisture, and extreme temperature as well as able to be used in outdoor environments.

  1. Low maintenance requirements:

The enclosed design minimizes external contamination and reduces wear and tear, hence the requirement for frequent maintenance is reduced.

  1. Adapt to load changes:

The box transformer is designed to accommodate a variety of load requirements and change accordingly to power demand changes without compromising performance or reliability.

Application

  1. Urban power distribution:

Given its application in densely populated areas in which it can be utilized to provide localized power distribution to residential and commercial buildings, it is best suited to provide stable voltage close to end users.

  1. Industrial complexes:

Industrial environments require a higher amount of high-demand equipment and these transformers serve to ensure that these industries stay operational with the power they need for that high-demand equipment.

  1. Renewable energy sites:

It is usually installed at wind and off-wind solar farms to change the generated power to the right grid voltage; this aids effective integration with the main grid.

  1. Transportation hubs:

Box transformers are used at airports, train stations, and subway systems, to maintain power for lighting, signaling, and equipment operation so that critical infrastructure has the required performance.

  1. Remote and rural electrification:

By its compact and durable design, the electrical substation transformer can be conveniently installed for delivering power to rural or remote areas where the reliability of the distribution system is essential and space and maintenance resources are scarce.
