What is Distribution Arrester?

The distribution arrester is a protective device used in electrical distribution networks to shield equipment, such as transformers and power lines, from overvoltage events caused by lightning strikes or switching operations. These arresters are normally located on poles or mounted wherever close to the equipment they guard. They should not be confused with station arresters which are utility-grade arresters used in high-voltage substations; the distribution arresters are intended for use in MV networks where they serve essentially the same function of limiting surge voltages to permitted values. The basic element of the given device is the metal-oxide varistor (MOV) which possesses a non-linear resistance characteristic. In a normal operating state, the MOV retains a high impedance thus limiting the current flow through it. However, when there is a surge, the MOV resistance drops low enabling the arrester to conduct and take the surge energy to the ground thereby protecting the protected electrical/electronic equipment. This fast action reduces the probability of insulation damage, equipment destruction, and possible power blackouts.

Station Arresters VS Distribution Arresters

Substation arresters are usually utilized in substations used for high-voltage transmission with voltage ratings of Hundreds of kV. They are put in substations to shield transformers circuit breakers and other important equipment from high-energy faults. Substations, on the other hand, experience higher voltages as well as energy levels and therefore are relatively larger and are capable of handling these larger surges. They are generally applied in conditions where their maintenance and monitoring are possible to a greater extent.

Lightning arrester for distribution transformer is employed in medium voltage distribution systems normally witnessing voltage range of a few kV to forty kV. These are fitted at the utility poles or close to the distribution transformers to shield the medium voltage units together with the electric supply lines to the consumers. Distribution arresters are relatively smaller and are easier to install on poles and other distribution structures, and they are intended to be more reliable under a wider range of and probably tougher environmental conditions and need less maintenance in comparison. They manage less amount of energy fluctuations characteristic of medium voltage distribution systems.

Benefits

  1. Equipment Protection:

Protect transformers, power lines, and other distribution network components from destructive voltage spikes hence increasing the useful life of the components.

  1. Improved Reliability:

The distribution surge arrester lessens the occurrence of power outages since it immediately shunts the overvoltages hence maintaining a steady power supply to the consumers.

  1. Cost Savings:

Prevents possible surge-related damages to electrical equipment within the network hence reducing the need to repair or replace broken equipment.

  1. Compact Design:

These poles are smaller in size and lighter in weight, they can be installed easily on utility poles and other structures; making them suitable to be used in distribution networks all over the world.

  1. Environmental Durability:

Designed taking into consideration factors such as weather and pollution to guarantee long use with minimal maintenance.

Application

  1. Utility Poles:

They can be mounted on the utility poles to safeguard the overhead cables including transformers in case of lightning impulse and switching over voltages.

  1. Distribution Transformers:

This is connected close to distribution transformers to protect them from over-voltage transients to supply power to consumers without interruption.

  1. Capacitor Banks:

It can be applied for the protection of capacitive equipment, capacitor banks in particular, which are widely used in distribution networks for purposes of voltage control and power factor compensation.

  1. Switchgear:

This can also be used on medium voltage switchgear to protect the equipment from voltage transients whilst switching.

  1. Underground Cable Terminations:

The distribution lightning arrester is installed on the end of either direct buried cables to protect the cables from surges that may result in insulation breakdown or the cables themselves.
