What is the High Voltage Surge Arrester?

An essential device in electrical power systems, the High Voltage Surge Arrester, protects equipment and infrastructure from damage arising from overvoltage surges, including those caused by lightning or switching operations. The purpose of the design is to confine and securely shunt excessive voltages to the ground, stopping insulation failure or the destruction of transformers, circuit breakers, and vital parts of the transmission and distribution system. At the heart of it, there is usually a set of metal oxide varistors (MOVs), which present non-linear resistance. In typical operational situations, these varistors deliver extraordinarily high resistance, which permits only a weak current to flow. In response to a surge, their resistance dramatically drops, permitting them to safely conduct surge energy to the ground rapidly. After the surge is over, the arrester makes its transition back to its high resistance state prepared for additional protection. Often found in substations, overhead transmission lines, as well as multiple other high-voltage applications where the danger of overvoltage is present.

High Voltage Surge Arrester VS Ordinary Surge Arrester

The purpose of the surge arresters is to defend power systems from a different range of overvoltage events, including lightning impact, switching surges, and other types of transient electrical disturbances. They work in high-voltage transmission and distribution circuits and commonly incorporate advanced materials such as metal oxide varistors (MOVs) to rapidly respond to overvoltage situations, delivering more complete protection for equipment by securely releasing surplus energy. Usual lightning arresters are created to defend against lightning strikes that hit directly. The emphasis is on diverting lightning energy from buildings or equipment, with less protection for alternative surges caused by switching operations.

Why use High Voltage Surge Arrester?

Maintaining the reliability and safety of power systems, especially in applications with high voltage, relies critically on the high-voltage arrester. This important defensive method stops overvoltage surges from lightning contacts, switching operations, and random transient irregularities that may endanger sensitive equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, and transmission lines. In the absence of adequate protection, these overvoltages can create insulation failures, equipment failures, or more alarmingly, total system blackouts leading to major downtime and repair expenses. Lightning arresters are rapid responders to unexpected surges, absorbing extra energy and then restoring normal situations while maintaining the current flow. They can deal with several surge events over a given period, allowing persistent security and reduced requirements for routine maintenance or changes. These products can withstand rough environmental conditions and work well in a variety of climate circumstances, such as heavy rain, air pollution, and serious cold temperatures. They serve an important function in sustaining the integrity of the high-voltage network and are fundamental to its stability and endurance, permitting efficient energy distribution while bypassing costly disruptions.

Essential maintenance tips

  1. Regular Visual Inspections

Be aware of apparent dangers such as splits or changes in color that could show a decline in condition.

  1. Monitor Leakage Current

Normally, a greater leakage current suggests internal problems, which could imply it’s the moment for a change.

  1. Check Grounding System

Check that the grounding system is working properly to defend the capacity of the arrester.

  1. Environmental Cleaning

Clean the lightning surge arrester in polluted regions to stop surface contamination and reduce the likelihood of flashover.
