A ground-installed power distribution device in residential, commercial, and industrial areas is the pad-mounted electrical transformer. Typically, it is placed on a concrete pad for easy access and durability, in a secure, weatherproof, tamper-resistant metal housing. The primary use of this transformer is to efficiently reduce the voltage of high-voltage electricity from the utility grid to lower voltages for end-use applications in underground distribution systems. Their compact design means they’re ideal for urban or suburban settings where aesthetics and space need to be taken into account, and avoid the need for overhead lines. These transformers are equipped for reliable performance with oil-immersed or dry-type cores and coils and with minimized energy losses. Safety features also consist of locks, fault monitors, and isolated bushings preventing unwanted access and electrical harm.
Different than pad-mounted transformers, substation transformers have different designs, and different functionalities and applications. Pad-mounted transformers are ground-installed compact tamper-resistant encased metal housings. Typically used in underground distribution networks to step down medium voltage such as 10–35 kV to low voltage levels suitable for residential, commercial, and small industrial use. Being compact they are ideal for areas that demand aesthetics, space, and safety, such as urban neighborhoods, and shopping centers. Typically, these transformers are oil-immersed or dry type, use simpler cooling systems, and need little maintenance because of the simple transformer design and low power capacity.
However, while substation transformers are large and designed to step down transmission voltages of 69 kV or more to medium voltages for further distribution, they are still in comparison to these wind turbine generators quite small. Highly specialized transformers are installed in dedicated substations, located at important junctions of regional and national power grids, where they form necessary components of power transmittal and distribution over long distances. Its advanced cooling systems like oil an immersed radiator with pumps or fan for cooling, are designed with such power loads in mind. Substation transformers are part of automating the grid and are subject to regular maintenance and tied to additional systems for voltage regulation and grid stability.
For practical and aesthetic reasons pad-mounted transformers are typically painted green. These transformers are in green color which makes it easier for these transformers to blend into the outdoor environment like residential neighborhoods, parks, and commercial areas. Since these transformers are mostly installed in a landscaped or grassy area, the green appearance them to fit in with nature, affronting the presence of the transformers, and keeping the overall look running of the herbs. The green paint has a functional purpose as well. Typically, pad-mounted transformers feature coatings that are weather-resistant and corrosion-proof, shielding the metal housing from Mother Nature’s harshest elements — wet, hot, and UV. The traditional green color is used because it fits so neatly into industrial-grade protective coatings commonly found on outdoor equipment.
