What is the Station Arrester?

The station arrester is a high-voltage electrical equipment used to safeguard electrical equipment in the substations against transient overvoltage such as that caused by lightning or switching. Their work principle is achieved through the protection of the voltage magnitude by ensuring that it is never beyond a given threshold that would harm transformers, circuit breakers, or any other aspect of the substation. The arrester normally comprises metal-oxide varistors (MOVs) that possess highly non-linear resistance values. When the voltage on the arrester looks higher than its rated protection level, the MOVs begin to conduct and then draw off the surge current and at the same time limit the voltage. Such timely action helps in eliminating the abnormal condition and prevents the system from any further disturbance. In this regard, it is extremely important to use such technology to preserve the reliability of the power systems and ensure that the safety of the circuits, especially at high voltage levels, can be maintained even in the presence of minor disturbances. They are designed to function irrespective of the environmental conditions and are usually deployed outdoors and are exposed to factors such as water from rain and snow, air airborne pollution among others.

 

 

How it works?

Station class arrester employed metal-oxide varistors (MOVs) for the safeguard of electrical equipment from high voltage transients. In normal conditions, the MOVs are in a high resistance state, and as a result, the arrester is inoffensive. During a surge, the MOVs’ impedance decreases and they can pass and dissipate the extra voltage to the ground with protection of voltage from rising to dangerous levels. After that, the MOVs are in a high resistance state while the arrester returns to its standby mode while providing sustained protection to the substation equipment.
