The surge arrester porcelain busing is an essential part of electrical systems used to physically insulate as well as protect surge arresters and ensure proper operation of electrical energy. It is made of porcelain which is an excellent insulator, and the bushing provides a passage for high-voltage conductors through grounded structures for instance transformer cases or switchgear. Its primary role as a protective device is to act as a barrier between the electrical system and the disturbances originating externally such as in the form of impulses coming from sources such as lightning or switching making impulses that may have high voltage levels, that pose a threat of jeopardizing sensitive equipment. Porcelain has more tensile strength than any other material, and this attribute transfers to the bushing to improve its weather-proof capabilities for outdoor use. Also, porcelain is non-porous, and as such, is less likely to trap dirt and other contaminants that can cause flashovers while at the same time offering the added reliability of long-term operation. Therefore, the porcelain bushing, when incorporated in surge arrestors, allows the necessary equipment to discharge extra energy to the ground without compromising the stability and reliability of the electrical structures and helps safeguard key facilities against high voltage surges.
The porcelain bushing allows the high-voltage conductors to pass through the ground barrier whilst maintaining the overall performance of the surge protector as well as electrical isolation from other components.
Developed to be used with surge protectors, it offers a robust path for the dissipation of energy produced by voltage surges for instance by lightning strikes or switching actions whereby the equipment together with the entire power grid is safeguarded.
Besides the insulation duties, it also acts as a load-bearing structure for the surge protector – this is in light of circumstances when the protector is subjected to extra forces like storms, earthquakes, or any extra burden on the outer part of the solar panel.
The bushing’s design minimizes the risk of surface leakage current, which is critical to preventing energy loss during the operation of the surge protector. This feature is particularly important in highly polluted areas.
It plays a vital role in ensuring controlled and safe grounding of excess energy to prevent damage to other parts of the system. Its design effectively dissipates energy during surge events without compromising the function of the arrester.
Lightning arrester bushing should be noted porcelain bushings do not wear due to rain, snow, and ice accumulation. They do not deteriorate when exposed to adverse conditions for long and this makes them suitable for use in outdoor applications especially where the conditions are hostile.
Porcelain material, upon which these bushings are made, provides good thermal stability that will allow them to function well in high as well as low temperatures. This makes them suitable to be used where there is hot temperature, as well as where it is extremely cold, and freezing.
In contrast with other types of material, it does not erode or crystallize when subjected to the effects of ultraviolet light. This UV-resistant ability guarantees that they do not fade quickly and can therefore last long, especially in areas where sunlight is pretty intense.
Porcelain bushings are physically strong and therefore capable of handling mechanical forces that arise due to factors such as wind, hurricanes, or even earthquakes. This strength supports enough to avoid mechanical failure during the occurrence of severities.
Porcelain is a smooth, hydrophobic surface and does not attract dust, dirt, and pollution hence has low chances of flashes during wet conditions such as storms. This feature is especially useful in regions that have a warm climate and heavy rainfall or high humidity levels.
Despite the strength of porcelain bushings, their fragility makes them susceptible to shock or sudden mechanical impact. They can break or shatter if subjected to extreme forces, such as heavy objects dropped on them or accidents during transportation and installation.
Compared to alternatives such as polymer or composite bushings, porcelain bushings are relatively heavy. This can make installation more challenging and may require additional support structures, especially for large installations in high-voltage systems.
Porcelain bushings are considered to have mechanical strengths but in terms of seismic sensitivity, they are more vulnerable to major quaking than flexible polymer bushings since they cannot vibrate strongly in the way of load draining.
Porcelain has no flexibility at all and this is not good in cases where flexibility is required such as to accommodate movement or vibrations in the systems that are being installed.
Arrester porcelain bushing also proves quite costly when it comes to production and fixing them as compared to some of the new materials in the market like polymer or composite bushings. This may prove disadvantageous for several reasons especially when considering the costs of projects.
